Charlize Theron really works this taffeta fitted dress to perfection. One of our customers wanted this dress with a few alterations to the design. We made it in just 3 weeks with the addition of a larger fishtail and buttons down the back but it looked equally as stunning on her. I’m sure she had a wonderful prom night. The Oscars 2009

There were lots of great dresses on the red carpet and a few bad ones too. The most interesting dresses for me, though, were seen at the after show parties. My favorites included Kate Beckinsale, Cat Deeley and Marisa Tomei.

The worst dressed award has to go to Rachel Weisz in this horrendous outfit. The top doesn’t flatter her anyway but to put it together wit those shoes is just overkill. She has split her frame up into 3 sections and made herself look dumpy, which she isn’t.

The Lilly would also make a great wedding dress with a train at the back for a more traditional look. Sex and the City

It has been announced that all 4 girls are on board for a second SATC movie to begin filming this Summer. Patricia Fields is responsible for the wardrobe of the main characters and I have to say that I love the majority of the outfits. The only exception was the ridiculous belt around the bare midriff blip in an otherwise wonderful wardrobe.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

My favourite outfits have to be the newspaper print Dior dress that Carrie wore to meet Natasha (idiot stick figure with no soul) and the pink silk chiffon Donna Karan creation in the wedding where Big took a phone call in the middle of her poem. (Series 2)

It would look very similar made in nude or pale pink silk chiffon with beading and would be perfect for a prom or wedding.

The best episodes ever for fashion had to be the last two set in Paris. The outfits were incredible and the cinematogrophy set a perfect backdrop for the creations. I especially loved the scene in the patisserie with the dog. He was as beautiful as the dresses!

Let’s hope the next film will be full of gorgeous new clothes to salivate over.

Nude fashion

                                                                

Nude is back as a popular choice for gowns this Spring but it must be worn with care. If you have the advantage of a tan or naturally darker skin then you are lucky. you can wear nude without too much embellishment and just let the natural colour stand off your skin tones. Even if you are pale but have dark hair, the nude tones work well against the contrast of dark hair. Just look at one of our customers in a nude/peach Chloe dress. However contrast this with Tilda Swinton, in Berlin for the 59th Film Festival. The dress is too much of the same tone as her hair and skin. The dress is lost. Admittedly, I don’t like the dress myself ; it is too shapeless and blah! But there are things she could have done to improve the way it looks. Wearing  stronger make up or a darker necklace to break up the flesh tones would have worked but this head to toe flesh colour is boring and Tilda just looks washed out.

The way to wear this colour without looking washed out is beautifully demonstrated by Cate Blanchett who looks positively radiant in a nude Armani Prive dress in Cannes. She has used stronger make up and drop earrings to help balance the paleness of the dress against her pale skin and hair. She wins hands down in the fashion stakes.

Off the Shoulder

Asymmetrically shouldered dresses seem to be the big fashion hit at the moment for evening gowns.
There can’t be anyone left on earth who hasn’t seen Michelle Obama in her gorgeous ivory dress at the inauguration ball, although I would have preferred it without the embellishment of all the flowers.

 

The Screen Actors Guild Awards also turned up quite a few one shouldered dresses too.

I love the colour of this dark teal dress.

 Nicolette Sheridan was a bit too over the top for me. The colour is beautiful but the sleeve makes it look a little like an 80’s Disco Diva : old fashioned not retro. On a lesser scale I feel the same way about Teri Hatcher.

Viola Davis looked stunning in yellow. Simple cut and beautiful.

The Oscars

My lifelong passion

My name is Gail McManus and I started my love affair with clothes and shoes many years ago when I was about 8 and my mum, a seamstress, would take my childish attempts at design and turn them into beautiful dresses.
I grew up through my teens in the age of new romantics and boy did that give scope for creativity. My home was Sheffield, the birthplace of The Human League, Heaven 17 and ABC. Flouncy pirate shirts abounded as did ra-ra skirts and shaggy permed hair!
I toyed with the idea of fashion as a career but went down the safer route of the Insurance Industry.
After 18 years, a successful career and power suits (arghh what was I thinking?) the fashion world beckoned again. I opened a small boutique in Sheffield selling casual wear.
My partner Rob and I slaved late into the night getting that first shop ready. (Well he slaved and I supervised) The shop grew and soon we were receiving more requests for prom dresses. We eventually decided that this was our niche market and invested in prom dresses. We found a fabulous seamstress who had a wealth of experience and a designer who had many years experience in designing prom dresses for the American and Australian prom markets. Our evening wear collection was growing and so were the number of customers visiting from outside Sheffield. This was our time to expand onto the internet and here we are!
